Artist Statement

I’d like to take you out of your day for just a moment. Maybe make you feel a little something? A memory of how the music moves you?

I start with some shapes, or some lines and then try to fix them until the work is done. I work slow. I accumulate a lot of material to begin with. It takes a lot of potatoes to make a fifth of whiskey. A lot of flowers to make a gram of perfume. I’d like it to be more efficient. I’m just not. I paint many layers in a painting before I get to a final version. Try many runs through the press until I achieve a finished plate. Do many versions of a drawing. Wanting to create a sense of time or space or emotion. The one thing I don’t want you to feel is how hard I worked to get there.

There is a conversation with the materials. A negotiation, an agreement, and then a consensus when we are finished. The question is why make the effort. Is it just self indulgence? Or that feeling of surprise at where we ended up as opposed to where we are going. And the cycle repeats itself. Gets going in your consciousness, like a brain worm that keeps burrowing in and you just can’t let it go until you get a sense of completion. A feeling that you answered a question
